Help us plan for Magruder Park’s future!
Magruder Park is located at 40th Avenue and Hamilton Street. The Park covers 32 acres and features a recreation center, playgrounds, basketball, tennis and volleyball courts, picnic pavilions, walking and biking trails as well as soccer, football and softball fields. Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission operates Hamilton Splash Park on the west end of the park.
In 2017, the City plans to apply for a Maryland Department of Natural Resources Community Parks and Playground Grant to upgrade the existing playground amenities at Magruder Park. Hyattsville has previously received grant awards for upgrades at Hyatt Park (2014) and Dietz Park (scheduled installation, 2017). The grant application for Magruder Park will focus on the existing playground, tennis and basketball court areas. If awarded, additional community outreach will be held to help finalize the design. The anticipated timeline for installation of renovations or upgrades is 2018.
You can help shape the future of Magruder Park NOW by sharing your insight on how the park is currently used and what changes will make the park better. Speak Up, HVL!

Replant 4 shade trees to replace the 4 mature trees that have been lost.

Thanks for your comment, Gloria.

I agree - Magruder needs more shady areas. Also, the path along the soccer fields is a prime target for wayward soccer balls. My 2 year old has almost been hit a few times. Would be great to figure out a way to ensure that players aren't aiming for people on the pathways.

General spruce-up! Older structures refreshed, replaced or repaired. Everything is just showing it's age (and I've been playing at that park for almost 40 years). Maybe the addition of a skate/bike park area.

I've been at Magruder Park to vote, attended community events / festivals, and for the most part, I use Magruder Park to pass through to reach the tributary trails.
That small bridge is also not good for biking. There are big changes in elevation, bumps, and obstructions that impede easy use. Also, it's too narrow. This location needs a better bridge -- wider, like the bridges throughout the rest of the trail system -- to make it safe and easy both for pedestrians and cyclists at the same time.
Frequently, there is standing water at the back of the parking lot. Before, this made for a mosquito breeding zone; now, we risk Zika virus. That area needs leveling or drainage improvement, for health and safety and also for environmental health so the water gets to the soil where it's needed, rather than being stuck on pavement.
The vista from the 'back' of the Park to the Tributary Trail could be a lot more beautiful if the undergrowth was removed so that the streams were visible from inside the Park. That would also improve safety -- because all that undergrowth can harbor people who are up to no good.
There are places along the Trails where kudzu is growing, not at all far from Magruder Park. I haven't seen it in Magruder --YET -- and know there are periodic efforts to remove invasive non-native species from these areas, but I'm amazed that kudzu has been allowed to grow untouched. It would be wise if our City took steps -- as we've had to do with snow removal, at times -- even when the state, or NCPPC, isn't taking care of certain things that must be addressed. Kudzu should not be ignored!

I love having Magruder Park in our neighborhood. The playground is really nice for my friends' kids, and I bring my dog there a lot for walks. I often run into neighbors that I know there. I also like the tennis courts and the circular "track" around the park. I like how it connects to both the neighborhood near Crittenden (I enjoy walking up the stone path past the Trumbull Trail) and also to the Northeast Branch bike trail on the opposite side-- I use this regularly for biking and jogging. I echo Gloria and would love to see more shade trees planted in the park.

Extending the paved path to create a longer bike/run path would be great (and repairing the parts of it that are currently deteriorating, like the small bridge overpass). Updating the playground equipment would be great - what about using the melded rubber instead of mulch? Similar to the Imagination Playgrounds around the county.

I use the park playground with my kids and also as part of my running route. It'd be nice to see the play equipment updated and the extension of the paved path to increase the walk/run loop.

Recreation (tennis, running, walking, biking, etc), Dog walking and various community events. My kids use the playground, the rec center for camp and the "loop" for bike riding. We enjoy the nature trail and the access to the NW branch trail.

I use it as an entry to running trails and when i attend community events. Sometimes I park there but mostly I run or walk to it so I don't usually bring my car.

I am pretty new to Hyattsville, but I love taking my one-year-old grandson to Magruder Park . I love the variety of equipment that provides activities for a wide range of ages and that some are educational and sensory like the zylophone. Wish the toddler area had the soft pavement like the park by the community garden. I do wonder, though' if that dark surface is too hot in the summer.

I have used the Park once last year to play tennis. But after one game, we looked for another public court. Why? Because although very convenient, the court surface in Magruder Park is in very bad shape.
The courts would be used if were in better shape and it may be that converting one of the two into a pickle ball court would make it popular. Pickle ball is a growing sport and its popularity might bring in more users.

I use it as a gateway to the bike trail.

I walk my dog almost every day in the park.

How about some signage. I'd like see signs saying how long the loop is, what types of different trees are, etc. Liked all of Mr. Riddles suggestions as well.

When my kids were little, we went to Magruder Park all the time to use the playground. Now they sometimes go down there to use the fields for pick up games of soccer or football with friends. It would be great to have a larger recreation center and bathroom facility.

I walk my dog there everyday, I also run and bike in the park, enjoy festivals, fireworks, voting, nature watching, and more.
I'd love to see some upgrade in the park Larger rec center - maybe with classes. Improved trails, exercise equipment on the trails or in the park, lighting, water fountains that operate year round, upgrade and repair tennis courts (they are cracked and the gates don't close correctly), the bridge over the water needs replacing, increased positive signage reminding people this is our park and we all need to be responsible for keeping it clean and safe. The amount of trash in and around the park is unacceptable. On busy weekends they cans are overflowing - the basketball & tennis courts are often littered with garbage, despite cans nearby. And after soccer and football usage - stuff & waste is left behind - if those folks have permission/rentals why are they not responsible for picking up after themselves? Our park is such a beautiful resource and gets so much use - but it shouldn't just be up to the public works dept. (and I know they work hard down there) to keep it clean, we all must play a part.

I'm relatively new to the area and the proximity to the park was a definite draw. I walk my dog in the park (along the loop and in woods) nearly every day. My toddler plays at the playground weekly and I love the range of equipment there. I'll often run/jog through the park on the way to the Tributary Trails.

My boyfriend and I currently use the park for pickup ultimate frisbee, running, tennis, and access to the northwest branch trail for running and biking.
