Help us plan for Magruder Park’s future!
Magruder Park is located at 40th Avenue and Hamilton Street. The Park covers 32 acres and features a recreation center, playgrounds, basketball, tennis and volleyball courts, picnic pavilions, walking and biking trails as well as soccer, football and softball fields. Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission operates Hamilton Splash Park on the west end of the park.
In 2017, the City plans to apply for a Maryland Department of Natural Resources Community Parks and Playground Grant to upgrade the existing playground amenities at Magruder Park. Hyattsville has previously received grant awards for upgrades at Hyatt Park (2014) and Dietz Park (scheduled installation, 2017). The grant application for Magruder Park will focus on the existing playground, tennis and basketball court areas. If awarded, additional community outreach will be held to help finalize the design. The anticipated timeline for installation of renovations or upgrades is 2018.
You can help shape the future of Magruder Park NOW by sharing your insight on how the park is currently used and what changes will make the park better. Speak Up, HVL!

A public bike repair station, something similar to the Dero Fixit -- http://www.dero.com/product/fixit/ -- or the Bike Fixtation -- http://www.bikefixtation.com/products/ -- would be fantastic in Magruder (having one along the Trolley Trail, too, would be nice). Even if the full bike repair station with tools, air, and water isn't possible, having at least an accessible air compressor to fill up tires would be very handy.

Extend the paved pathway so that it loops around the football field and back fields. the result is that new path and existing path would look like a figure 8. This would give park users a longer path to walk/run/bike. It would also provide a loop that would not enter the parking area. An alternative would be a paved path from existing path around one side of the back field and out the back of the park to connect with the Northwest branch bike path.

Thanks for the ideas, Anton!

I second the better bike facilities. Would like to add a plug for a simple splash pad in the play area. Not to upstage the county pool but sometimes in the summer the littlest ones just want to be wet, it would also make an otherwise hot play area a bit more friendly.

I love the idea of extending the paved pathway-- I see the existing one used so frequently for joggers and walkers, especially weekend mornings. I also love the idea of adding a water feature to the playground area for hot summer days.

I would like to see a pull-up bar and other simple fitness equipment. Thanks!

Would be great to haveanindoor play space for toddlers so there is some place fun to take them in the winter.

I have enjoyed walking the boardwalk through the very small area to the side of the soccer field. It is peaceful and the native plants are a joy to see.
However, the boardwalk itself is in pretty bad shape.
The small pond near the entrance is doing what pond's do--filling up with plants; a natural succession but it was fun to see frogs and tadpoles there in previous years.
The walk in the swampy area and this pond made the park almost a place of refuge. I feel safe there which is not the way I feel when walking in other parts of the park. In those areas I feel vulnerable' perhaps its because the landscape is so bad--so many invasive vines and such give the impression that no one cares or is watchful.

keeping with the amenities already in place but would love for additional items at park location: adult swim lanes, individualized adult abled exercise space and equipment outdoors, childcare, senior space area, rehabilitation/medical disabled enrichment space outdoors, concert venue, camp grounds, treehouse, equestrian/pet farm, soft pad foam for playground instead of dirt/chipped wood, fire safety equipment readily accessible onsite, emergency call boxes

This is something little, but can we please get updated/repaired basketball hoops? The existing hoops are not in good repair and have not been since I have lived near Magruder.
I'd also like to see lights on the softball field, and the ability to use it for a city-centric league. That's a true wish list thing for me.

We'd love to see the Hamilton pool get some more upgrades to make it bigger and larger and more fun for adults as well as kids. It would be lovely to have a closer option than PG Pool and Adelphi Pool, something that had similar amenities. Perhaps it could even be transformed into a community center like the one Greenbelt has.
Fitness equipment such as the kind that is found on the Northeast Branch Trail in College Park would be well-used by some of the walkers and runners on the trails, and also give adults an outdoor fitness option.
Also, we second the bike repair station, which would be very useful and great!

I would also favor some outdoor exercise equipment like the body weight exercises on the Northeast branch trail in college park.

Just want to throw up a shout-out for the mulch pile at the park! It's awesome! Hope we can keep this program going.

I also think the pool needs to be more adult friendly... maybe early morning swim times for the adults... the pools should open by 9 on the weekends and possibly stay open later during the week for adults... its closed before I get home from work!

A community garden would be cool - I've heard there's a wait for the one in Hyatt Park and it seems like there's enough space in Magruder to accommodate some plots.
Also a dog park would be fun!
