Help us plan for Magruder Park’s future!

Magruder Park is located at 40th Avenue and Hamilton Street. The Park covers 32 acres and features a recreation center, playgrounds, basketball, tennis and volleyball courts, picnic pavilions, walking and biking trails as well as soccer, football and softball fields. Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission operates Hamilton Splash Park on the west end of the park.

In 2017, the City plans to apply for a Maryland Department of Natural Resources Community Parks and Playground Grant to upgrade the existing playground amenities at Magruder Park. Hyattsville has previously received grant awards for upgrades at Hyatt Park (2014) and Dietz Park (scheduled installation, 2017). The grant application for Magruder Park will focus on the existing playground, tennis and basketball court areas. If awarded, additional community outreach will be held to help finalize the design. The anticipated timeline for installation of renovations or upgrades is 2018.

You can help shape the future of Magruder Park NOW by sharing your insight on how the park is currently used and what changes will make the park better. Speak Up, HVL!

I love Watkins Regional Park in Upper Marlboro. The Wizard of Oz playground is so beautiful. The creative design makes it more fun for kids and adults to visit than the typical playground and the huge range of play equipment allows kids of all ages and abilities to have fun. People come from all over to visit that playground; I'd love to see Hyattsville working to incorporate some of these elements into our playground at Magrudedr.

Walker Mill also has a really cool playground area, as does Turkey Thicket. Just really creative spaces for the kids to play and explore.

Wheaton Regional has really nailed it with all of the various sport facilities, dog runs, picnic, playground and carousel + train.

Tell us what parks you have visited in your travels that have really impressed you. Why?

Englischer Garten, Munich -- romantic style naturalism, channeled waterways, wide open vistas, variety of uses -- biking, walking, surf boarding, 'naturalists', boating, dog-walking, sports.

Brookside Gardens -- Brookside Gardens is regionally renowned; providing testing grounds for new horticulture introductions and more. We are so close to UMD which has a GREAT program for horticulture, propagation of new and improved species, and grounds maintenance; why can't Magruder Park and vicinity be another open air lab for the horticulture and landscape design school, including students' work?

I agree with the likes of Wheaton Regional/Brookside gardens and I'd like to add Parc Guell in Barcelona, Spain. While it would be impossible to replicate that here, creating an engaging, funky, arty public gathering area in the a similar vein would be great if it were done well.

A local park I like and enjoy a lot is Lake Artemisia.

The size, good waking surface, proximity, and variety of environments, including a stream, a large pond, woods, grass/lawn make it welcoming for me. Indeed, the bridge over the creek is a lovely spot; one could almost see a moose drinking water!

The park is also quiet. Perhaps that's because of the lack of sports being played.

Also, it is well-cared for.

Additionally, I feel I am safe walking alone or with my dog. That's because there are always people there who are also enjoying themselves whether walking like me, biking, roller skating, fishing, pushing a stroller. I don't know these people but there's a shared sense of well-being.

The landscape, as I said, offer lots of diversity so can simply watch it change each season. And because I enjoy watching birds, the various environments offer fond shelter for a variety of wildlife.

So, peacefulness, variety of ecosystems, safety, cleanliness, and multiple use possibilities .....even in a small space....create a most inviting setting.

I visited several parks with soft turf-which I love. I think Watkins park has awesome qualities with its' variety of activities (inexpensive) and spaces for all ages. I enjoy the theme and equipment that was new at Lane Manor park. I like parks that are comfortable, plenty of choices of activities for outdoors and safe.
