My hometown partnered with a local environmental nonprofit called "Friends of Trees" which would offer native street trees (i.e. trees appropriate for parking strips that wouldn't buckle sidewalks or grow into power lines) to residents at a reasonable cost. Then, throughout the spring, volunteer tree crews would spend a few Saturday mornings going around to the residents' homes who purchased the trees and plant them correctly in front of their houses. It was a great way to increase the tree canopy and overcome the barriers for some residents of planting the trees themselves. I'd love it if Hyattsville could partner with such an organization.
